Betsy DeVos, the U.S. Department of Education Secretary, and possible real life Dolores Umbridge from Harry Potter, had one hell of an inconvenient Sunday after someone untied a $40 million yacht moored in Huron, Ohio, that drifted away, but not before crashing into a dock causing $5,000 to $10,000 in damages.
While a $5,000 to $10,000 would financially cripple many other Americans, DeVos’ husband is worth $5.4 billion, so this minor inconvenience will cost something like 1/1000th of 1 percent of DeVos’ net worth to repair the damages in even the most extreme case.
DeVos, who was appointed to the U.S. Department of Education having little to no understanding of how public education works, and who wants to arm teachers with guns to protect students against possible bear attacks, was in Northwest Ohio earlier this month to tour the Penta Career Center as well as the Lucas County Correctional Treatment program.
According to a police report obtained by the Toledo Blade, the yacht in question, The Seaquest, was moored at the Huron Boat Basin. The captain of the 163-foot yacht, called police at about 6 a.m. Sunday, saying that he and the crew realized at sunrise that someone had untied Seaquest from the dock, setting it adrift.
If DeVos’ sold that fancy boat of hers, she’d be able to put 3,768 students through public school. Instead, DeVos has intentionally not visited the struggling schools in her home state of Michigan, the same state where she has pumped millions of dollars to promote school choice and vouchers for private and parochial schools that consistently failed Michigan students.
The Seaquest is one of 10 boats registered to the DeVos family, and is so large it requires a crew. Sources have been unable to confirm why DeVos’ boat was in the Huron harbor to begin with, but are hoping surveillance videos may be used to help identify the vandal.
EDIT:: This article previously had the net worth percentage incorrectly listed as 1.85 percent. It’s actually closer to 1/1000th of a 1 percent and has been updated accordingly.
This article appears in Jul 25-31, 2018.

There is something poignant about an article concerning the US Secretary of Education that demonstrates the writer’s inability to perform a simple math exercise.
$10,000 / $5,400,000,000 = 0.000185%, not 1.85%.
The cliche is usually stated as, “Those who cannot do, teach”. Should we change “teach” to “journal” or “edit”?
And you, Mr.Krabach, are missing the fucking point! But that’s typical of a Republican prick!
OK, I thought I was going to read about how a yacht was vandalized and set adrift, which could have actually caused serious harm or injury to an inexperienced boater, instead, we’re reading an OPED about Betsy DeVos. While I think DeVos is totally not qualified for her position, the family has owned that yacht for quite a few years (or one similar) so it’s not on the taxpayer’s backs, no one deserves to be vandalized and yet put people in danger.
Glad so many are happy about their misfortune but what would you say if a youngster was killed because that yacht got away and the kid was fishing off of the breakwall?
DAN KRABACH – you are correct about the math. However, I think you might have misread the article (or its been edited since). It currently reads something like 1/1000 of 1%. That is still wrong. It should read something like 1/10000 of 1%. But I suspect the use of 3 zeros rather than 4 is likely a mere typo.
Also, her dad is worth 5.4 billion, not her husband. Do some fact checking before your next liberal rant. Talk to me about funding a failing public entity with your private money when you build Amway from the ground up. Why is it that people think they are entitled to others hard earned money?
