In news that really shouldn’t be surprising to anyone who checked out the registration fee price (cough, $120, cough) for the race, the Cleveland Rock ‘n’ Roll Half Marathon (and assorted races) are cancelled.

Here’s what the organizers said on the race’s Facebook page today:

It is with a heavy heart and after careful evaluation, that we have made the difficult but necessary decision to cancel the Rock ‘n’ Roll Cleveland Half Marathon, 10K & 5K on October 11, 2014 due to a number of circumstances, including low levels of participation and local support. We know that you have put forth a great amount of effort training for race day and apologize for the inconvenience. You will have the option to transfer to another Rock ‘n’ Roll Marathon Series event; transfer to next year’s Rite Aid Cleveland Marathon, 1/2 Marathon, 10K or 5k, or receive a full refund.
An email will follow to all registered runners – please contact us at rnrcleveland@competitorgroup.com if you have not received it by 9/5.

  1. So sad, clearly about the business. Let’s focus on the tow path races, rite aid, or any race that gives to our community instead of the rock and roll business series.

  2. I feel bad for the people who paid airfare, hotel, etc to make this race. Who the hell cancels a half marathon? Rock and roll sure does!

  3. I ran in the Chicago one a few weeks ago. The price is so high, because they gave out legit medals and had a concert headlined by Cold War Kids. These things cost money folks.

  4. Maybe you should know the facts before you report. The entry fee was $120 if you entered last minute. I payed $65 six months ago and that is a very fair price for a race of that magnitude. Really did a pointed the Rock and Roll capital couldn’t get behind the rock and roll race!!!

  5. These races are put on by a company owned by a private equity firm. So judge for yourself how heavy their hearts were at cutting their losses, I guess.

  6. Well thats bullshit….

So why is there not something in place that if an event of this type is planned in the city of Cleveland, why is there NOT a cancellation penalty that will discourage this??

  7. We have non refundable plane tickets and hotel nights. We didn’t think there was a chance of such a big race cancelling. Now we are stuck going to Cleveland, OH and trying to find something to do. They should have their sponsors/permits, etc. figured out before offering a race. We put hundreds of dollars into this race and time off of work and now we have nothing to show for it. Not cool.
