Smell it! Smell it!

  • “Smell it! Smell it!”

Very few bands sound better onstage than in the studio, but the Decemberists are one of those bands, as they proved last night at their packed show at Jacobs Pavilion at Nautica.

The Portland, Oregon, band dedicated last night’s set-closing song, “This Is Why We Fight” (from their new album The King Is Dead), to accordion and keyboard player Jenny Conlee, who’s fighting breast cancer at home during this tour.

But the show still rocked on, and the Decemberists treated fans to two encores, both infused with sex appeal and, of course, captivating charm. “Mariner’s Revenge” was accompanied by a boat that just happened to cruise by the Pavilion as frontman Colin Meloy sang. And “June Hymn” set the mood for canoodling couples.

  1. Agreed, the show was a great time. Did you leave before the encore(s)? The Mariner’s Revenge Song (complete with HUGE tanker/cargo ship going by) was pure serendipity. Awesome. Combined with an amazing opening act, a custom CLE poster created by artist David Welker, the spectacular weather… This show was a package deal!
