If you’ve flown out of or into Hopkins airport, you’ve probably seen this monument to stupidity. It’s a collection (amassed over only one year) of things people have tried to bring on a plane in Cleveland. We’ve never thought to take a picture of it before, but thankfully someone at Rachel Maddow’s blog did.
Scary, impressive, confounding, but not at all surprising at the same time. That’s our general reaction when seeing that someone tried to bring nun-chucks on a plane. Or the throwing stars. Or what looks to be dynamite. Or any of the other items in this impressive array of weapons. (Except the pie-serving instrument up in the left-hand corner. Not sure why that was a problem.)

This article appears in Aug 24-30, 2011.

Anyone who believes these items were “confiscated” should have their head examined….this has STAGED written all over it.
They took Granny’s favorite pie server
I had a friend who got her eyelash curler confiscated at Hopkins. If you don’t know what those look like, the handle is similar to small nail scissors, but the tool end is rounded with no sharp edges. Granted, this was the February after Sept. 11th and folks were still pretty freaked out, but really, I don’t think there is any way you could hurt someone with these things, even if you tried.
Hey! My hand grenade! Give it back!
