Yesterday, CBS news magazine show 60 Minutes shared with the country a gloomy aspect of Northeast Ohio that isn’t going to surprise anyone here: its glut of worthless, abandoned and gutted houses left in the wake of the ongoing foreclosure crisis.

Reporter Scott Pelley adopts the requisite masquerade of concern as he chats with former county treasurer Jim Rokakis about why it happened and what is being done, while taking a walking tour of some afflicted neighborhoods. Rokakis, who was the canary in the coal mine, warning the country about the oncoming crisis a decade ago, recites a litany of facts about the number of abandoned homes, the loss of nearby home values as a result, and the cost of demolishing homes that have been vandalized.

Pelley also talks with Clevelanders who struggle to keep up mortgage payments in the face of unemployment, loss of their business, and health issues. Now that’s what I call feel-good TV!

If you think you can stand hearing about any more of this, the video’s online:

  1. I have been up-side-down on my mortgage since Cheryl and I bought this house back in 86. I used it to finance my businesses and I always levered every dime I could. It caught me, but not until I started several small businesses and developed some of the best power companies in the area as customers. My largest customer was Nestle, well Stouffers’ really, but Nestle bought them way back and control-freaked them each year more until the old Stouffer history has been all but buried in our fine city. I saw the transformation of Stouffers’ to Nestle and it was as all things in giant corporate America and world are—bad for the communities and the people of the areas where the product was born. Wal-Mart dictated our manufacturing companies over the last couple of decades. They forced competition in a way which lowers cost, and also lowers quality as a direct result. The bean-counters raided our businesses with lawyers and MBA’s leading the charge against the people and the very soul of our manufacturing companies of world and USA.

  2. They began to control Solon and the other Stouffer’s plants with little smarties out in California pushing business changes and corporate deals upon our local plants. Politics has ruined business and giant corporations have ruined our spirits and people orientations in the USA. Giants are only interested in pushing their control-freak ideas up our asses, and in our communities. Our governor and his republican cronies in Columbus are trying to turn the country into another 1930′ Germany, controlling the media and what it is allowed to express. This very rant and rave could be slashed out of digital retrieval systems as a result of words like Wolfe Family or Les Wexner and his underwear factories in Africa having kids pick cotton to make fancy underwear for soft-porn girls with angry, yet sexy faces walking down a run-way of hard cocked audiences, polishing their rockets with mad abandon and seeking the absorbtion in pixel illusions.
Not too much different from Catholic boys pounding off with a Playboy in one hand and their rocket in the other. Maybe in the woods or a bathroom, the fantasy lives on and may even be held safe within cyberspace and conduction process captured by epilectic seizures and flu symptoms.

  4. I like the 60 minutes thing because it does not make guys like me who owe mor on our house than we may never be able to make for the rest of our lives. I lost track long ago. I think I have a house worth maybe one hundred thousand dollars in today’s market…and I owe well over 200,000.
Now before anyone starts telling me what a failure I am, I would like to list another group of true –false questions about me:
    1) I am a veteran
    2) I am a college grad
    3) I am a black belt
    4) I am a PI
    5) I am an orphan

  5. I hate that they plow these homes down. Hell I pay 600 a month to a wing nut to rent this horrible little house in a horrible neighborhood, complete with cockroaches and ants. They could give people these houses, let them pay the taxes and let them try to improve the neighborhood.
I know tons of people on disability that would jump at the chance to own their own home and would get help to fix it up. Give me four walls a ramp and heat and I will jump at the chance myself.
And by the way landlords, your houses are going to sit empty and get run down if you don’t lower your rent. Cleveland has a problem with people being unemployed. Hello, better to cut a price a little than to pay Cleveland to take it down.
By the way I am just thankful that this house doesn’t have mice and rats like the last one that we were renting that I lost because one rent check bounced in 4 1/2 years. I was almost homeless with 2 disabled adult children and a couple of small dogs.
Look, the disabled don’t want a hand out. But once in awhile it would be nice to catch a break.

  6. 123 Refinance reported that the Fixed mortgage rates are at their lowest level in six decades for the second straight week. That’s a great opportunity for those looking to buy or refinance a home.

  7. WOW get some help dude. Now I actually like the limits on words.I will let you in on a secret.Except for the story on the 23 year old who paid a gazillion dollars for a condo we all have problems. I own a real estate brokerage in Cleveland so tell me about it.
Truth is these homes are in great condition and I have buyers for them if the city or the banks would let us sell them in our structured financing program. We guarentee full price by the way.
Tearing down homes that are in perfect condition when families need homes seems sinister to me. It would be better to arrange financing options.
I think maybe the demo companies and the cities are billing extra cost for these teardowns and so there is an ulterior motive.
If not, contact me at carefree property solutions and let me show you how we get homes for the elderly and veterans. Why we are talking about bad ideas…close Burke.

  8. 007–Thank you for your interest in these opportunities and looking at houses from a more humane perspective. One of the thinking games I play is to imagine the electric was shut off like it was five years ago but more time to go south…you know..the old end-of-the-world plots/themes. Structures would become a huge need. In a world with all of these houses in pretty darn good condition, sitting and waiting for families and people of need to occupy them.

Or take another angle–how about a business which focused on the resurection of neighborhoods. Social experiments will need to be conducted with the unity of an area and the help others which it implies being the focus..We have a great opportunity to try some other things out in a different way. The hardest part of changing a government for the better is that there are too many people who resist change and like things nice and comfortable the way they are. This attitude is at an all time high in America today. We worship money and reinforce the men with money and power over politicians and lawyers. So long as we in Ohio are kissing the ass of Giant Corporations, they will continue to ship our manufacturing jobs out of the area, and bring our products back at the cheapest cost available in the world today and distribute them in mass quantities. The big guys gave away our industries and manufacturing jobs and is still going strong. Our giant corporations have so often traded our jobs in return to a more profitible and increased funds to go toward the shareholders and owners. It is this mentality which we all have been exploited by. Here is the Pecking-order in terms of how big corps look at goals: 1) Use of money and leverage in the form of a weapon. So long as this is seen as appropriate behavior by the board or the investors, we will continue the increased control which people place on the way in which they use their money as weapons often with enormous callateral damage.
    2) The number 1 thing then is the way in which someone uses their money. They often become self-absorbed with their management team, and use it for political and other attacks which the owner or CEO deems needed. Often in industry today the management team is too busy looking over their shoulder to pay any attention to the hour-lys who run the lines of manufacturing, always wondering if the boss was right: They could pick up stakes and move anywhere in the world and be up and running at maximums in two weeks. In today’s world and in our area, companies who do not get what they want here, just leave…pull up stakes and not even say good-bye.

  9. Concentrated wealth becomes paranoid and less and less trusting of anyone inside or outside of their Camalot. They rub shoulders and hood-wink other powerful and wealthy players. They all share one characteristic: They want more, much more. But they do not really know why or what the best use of the wealth is so you just have your lawyers and bean-counters retain as much for them as current bean-counting laws dictate. They know the drill..the current pros who are told to just always make the most money they can and lever the most political power. These types have always held back society and mankind.
Occupy Cleveland is also helping with the adaptation of the up-side-down house and the loss of jobs and income. The VA has been a God-send for me. They have paid my electric and gas bills for me recently, and also helped me get some toilet paper and other needs other than food.
Food stamps also saved our lives over the last six months or so. The Hunger Network has supplemented the food stamps nicely and has home grown stuff and home-made bread. I think that even after my ship comes in, I will still go and trade something for the bread. So then, just like over my entire life, survival has been more or less a comfortable experience.

After unemployment ran out, Cheryl and I have found ourself with as close to zero income as anyone could have. This is part of the plan, I guess, so that I could get no lower where money is concerned. A five year experience of reduction in income and therefore perceived needs, can create many good lessons.

  10. What if you helped build up the Imperial Avenue neighborhood, and other bottomed out people and neighborhoods all over. I like the secret Santa folks who are giving money and presents away. Greed has made us feel as though we must suffer for giving anything to a down-and-out group of humans. As though it is painful to release money in any form which does not work for our future and shrewd requirements..More and more is the battle cry which we hear today…and far too often. Change is happening and it is going to get faster and faster.

  11. I want to help people who are at the bottom. Og Mandino wrote a nice little story called ‘The Greatest Miracle in the world. It was about a guy who called himself a Ragpicker. He went around seeing souls at the bottom of their bad luck cycle with no where to go but up. The Greatest Salesman in the world’ is the self-help book of Ogs’ which gained him the most positive press.

  12. I started giving away duct aid kits three years ago. I date-coded them so that they could be recalled in the future and the person holding the number would get some little prize or chance at a bigger prize and the oldest ones would have the most value. There are some of them out there from 09! Because I have methods of making sure the kit and code are ligit..There are hundreds of them out there and many which would have found themselves anywhere. I gave quite a few of them out along rt. 2, or I90. I gave quite a few out at the road side rests or gas stations. Columbus has some and Amherst has some and Rocky River has tons of them buried all over. The Linden Tavern and the customers and workers have probably more than any single location other than my house.

  13. Scene and other free press publications seem to be the only ones who do not censor me. For one reason or another I have ruffled feathers of some of our large newspapers in Ohio. Also some of our large corporations have had me on their shit list for over five years. Money and political power and media control is how rich and powerful men gang up on the people, and keep them in their place…which is below them, and they intend to keep it that way. There have always been many people (mostly men) who push their money around every place they bless with their presence. I saw a don one day about twenty years ago come into an Italian resturant. There were a bunch of wanna-bes fussing after him and he was really playing up the God-Father image which was worshipped so in some establishments around Cleveland. I kept clear from direct eye-contact because I know that some people can read your mind if you do not like or respect them the way they feel you should. Now days it is not that easy for a rich person involved in organized crime to have you intimidated or put away completely. The frame ups and bought politicians and lawyers was easier to get away with twenty or thirty years ago. Jimmy and Frank were just playing cops and robbers and they were getting a piece of any transaction they could attach themselves to. They were small and greedy bean-counters who thought they had a right to push people around and play ‘Baby-faced Nelson and Pretty-Boy Floyd.’ This idiotic behavior which Jimmy and company so blatantly took full advantage of…they were not secretive at all. Once a tough guy mob gets put into place in any organization it is a negative for the whole bunch. Where there is intimidation using either money as a weapon of power, or politics as tools in the box, we will remain corrupt and vile.

  14. Judging is not our job while here on earth. Lawyers and man-made law in any culture can not be seen as high thought. Where money and its’ accumulations and where control over people are concidered, there can be no communications of value. If you think that a collection call is more serious than a telemarketting call trying to sell you, then you must learn to see the positive side of having all these large banks and companies wanting money which you don’t have. We live in a time which sucks in many ways and I think in many and most incidents which make our negative side come out, the choice is ours.
We not only choose our behavior, but also each and every thought which passes through our ear and mouth tunnels. Not one thought you have is of anyone elses doing but your own. It is a binary problem, the choosing of thoughts, and it is much less complicated than you may think. Find out the thoughts which rotate between your ears and which ones work and which ones do not work for you. Most of us just throw the same old shit to the cell phone everyday and call that business and communications. I believe that to be free in the way that people used to be, new and old ways of communication must be tryed and put into symbolic form and moved to the next stage of its’ equation through civil debate and seeking the truth…and getting rid of the false assumptions which have often been the very totally skewed foundation of the over all argument. You can never find truth if there is a giant flaw in your thought process telling you how to behave and think. We call this pushy prick side which all males have the ego. Don’t jump too Freudian, yet the recognition that there was a prick in all of our heads which always gave us the wrong instructions, and often trapped us in bear-hugs. No freedom once you make a crusial fuck-up. Like borrowing money from a knee-capper, your sleep may be interrupted often with bad dreams and panic attacks. Never borrow money from any one other than a bank. If the banks have you rejected. Keep trying any way. Remember, rejections are the lessons of great salesmen. Each interaction is an opportunity for psychotherapy and a learning and teaching relationship which can be made into a win–win negotiation of honesty and mutual need.

  15. I know I’ve been hogging the comment area of Scene news blogs. The reason is that they are the only ones who have not gotten legal–smeegal and pushy about their domains. The main stream media survives on the idea of control and censorship and editing of their owners and their political and religios and ecconomical beliefs. Because ideas and support systems of censored media are usually bad, we are giving our people and readers and watchers of main stream media a very unlevel and biased point of view…and then when it is conservative thinking which controls the media the very freedom of expression can be rejected on political and philosophical ideas by the powers controlling the media. The FCC is supposed to protect us from the overly biased news organizations like fox and cnn and the columbus dispatch, but they have been unable to influence the powers like the Wolfe Family of Columbus Ohio.

  16. The highest goal for social media needs to be to make positive think-tanks. I am often pleasantly surprised by the creative and smart and wise ideas which come from the everyman and woman of Cleveland. I see a new one or two everyday as I walk through the space and time jungle of North Ohio. The people are mostly good in this area and the only reason they are not good is because they have be tought the wrong lessons. Before they can become free, they must unlearn all of the false assumptions which were placed into their heads during their socialzation period. Unlearning is needed before true learning can happen. The blocks to logic which our false learning has created must be seen and replaced with sanity and calm reasoning.

  17. We all pass on false and detrimental ideas to the young and mask them with demands of adherance and disipline. But we do not teach thinking in these acts of demand. The children know it yet often are made to think that their good logic is the enemy of their teachers and parents and adapt less functional methods of determining how to act and how to behave. It is not truth and good thinking which we pass on to our young, but rather our mistakes in behavior and our hatreds and prejudices instead. If we ever learn to be honest and good to others and quit judging them for everything, life could be so much easier.

  18. Without reading Kenny Jaeger’s comments I disliked all of it because he hogged all the comment space on here. I hate people with diarrheic keyboards. As my own comment, we need to support OccupyForeclosures and other Occupy movements and stop being such sheep about letting banks and insurance companies push us around. Civil disobedience is the only solution to our oppression.

  19. It is a shame some common pervert was named the Scene’s Creep of the Week when there is such a compelling nomination to be had from one Kenny Jaeger. Dude, back off gently from the coke, ‘kay? And lube up those fingers or else the friction you create from micro-blogging on the Scene’s pages may spark a fire the likes of which has not been seen since 1871 Chicago (or at least 1969 on the Cuyahoga…). And, what the fuck is that avatar of yours? Some sort of stone etching from the Mound Builders version of a Dick and Jane book? Cripe.

  20. Having lived in East Atlanta for six years now, we LOVE it. Where else, in the heart of the city, can you be within easy walking distance of a huge variety of good restaurants, bars, a post office, a library, a vetrinarian, a pet shop, a gift shop, not to mention an awesome coffee house.Husqvarna warranty ottawa
