Back in October, Playhouse Square unveiled plans to string a spectacular 20 foot, 8,500 pound crystal chandelier across Star Plaza in downtown Cleveland – this week trusses to support the beast went up and workers continue to plug away on the project in anticipation of the May 2 official first light.

“We hope everyone will plan to be part of the excitement on May 2,” PlayhouseSquare President and CEO Art Falco told Scene back in the fall. “…[It will be quite a special night for Northeast Ohio. You are going to want to be able to say you were there.”

The idea is that this piece will be a neighborhood spectacle, admired not only by Clevelanders, but by people from around the world, Falco said.

The chandelier is just one component of the $16 million Theater District transformation, which also includes new gateways, light-up video signage, upgraded lighting and sound systems.

If you haven’t driven through the district lately, head over to NewsNet5 for a peek at the construction progress.

  1. …..and — please be aware that this is not a target for folks to see how far they can throw weighted objects into the air.

  2. That spot specifically is extremely windy. Have people thought about that when they decide to put the chandelier there?
