Update: The Toledo man who made headlines earlier this month for biting off part of his wife’s lover’s ear has been sentenced, the Sandusky Register reports.
Virgil Bates III was slapped with six months in a correctional treatment center, a $5,600 fine made payable to the victim, and a four-month work release program.
As for Bates and his wife, the Sandusky Register reports the pair has “reconciled” since, you know, mutilation in the name of love is pretty damn hot.

A Toledo man came home to a nasty surprise earlier this summer when he walked in on his wife in bed with her lover. His reaction? Put him in a headlock and bite off a piece of his ear, naturally.
The Toledo Blade’s Jennifer Feehan reports:
“I was able to get [the victim] in a headlock,” [Virgil Bates III] told Lucas County Common Pleas Judge Ruth Ann Franks Monday. “He proceeded to clamp down and bite my forearm. I proceeded to panic, and I wound up biting his ear, and a piece of his ear came off.”
Bates, 40, of 735 Toronto Ave., pleaded guilty to an amended charge of aggravated assault for the June 24 attack on Matthew Tipton, 44.
Feehan also reports that the top portion of Tipton’s ear had been cleanly gnawed off and could not be repaired.
If convicted at his Aug. 31 hearing, Bates could face 18 months in prison.

There are just so many bad ideas going on in this story I don’t even know where to begin.
After reading the update to this story, I’m just as dumbfounded as before. As if the crime and sentence weren’t interesting enough, we have that little “they reconciled” gem to go with it, the cherry on top of our crazy sundae.
