Numbers Never Lie: Since joining the NCAA Division I Football Bowl Subdivision (Division I-A) in 1987, the Zips have had five head coaches, eight winning seasons -.500 or better – and an overall record of 143 wins, 226 losses and three ties. Let’s not forget that there was immediate controversy during the transition to the big show due to the ouster of popular head coach Jim Dennison for Gerry Faust and what was seen as an open checkbook for football at the expense of the other teams. From University of Arkansas Athletic Director Frank Broyles, who was hired by the university as a consultant in early 1987 to conduct a two-month evaluation: I found the current status of the University of Akrons intercollegiate athletic program to be virtually consumed by negativism. The next head coach will be battling something worse than negativism — apathy — which will take more than a thick bankroll to cure.
