The Cuyahoga County’s Public Works Department department once again hosts a public tour of the Veteran’s Memorial Bridge and Subway station. Saturday, Aug. 19, tour participants get to venture underneath the 3112-foot bridge to one of Cleveland’s creepiest spots, something you can only do once a summer.

The tour begins on Superior Viaduct, the bridge’s official entrance. You already know about the Veterans Memorial Bridge’s upper motorway, but the lower deck (read: dark, abandoned tunnel), which hasn’t been of much use to anyone since 1954 when streetcars were discontinued, is what everyone has come to see. Films showing the history of the place will add to the eeriness of the destination as you walk along the self-guided tour.

The event is free, and goes from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. No reservations are required. 2433 Superior Viaduct, 216-348-3824, publicworks.cuyahogacounty.us

  1. The wooden mock-up of a streetcar presents a wonderful photo op…
All the selfie-obsessed idiots can stand in front of it…
Then they can snap an image that looks like they’re about to be killed.
    Great fun!

  2. This is very cool. I worked construction on Massimmos Restaurant(25th and detroit) back in 1990 and we would go down through their basement and sit on that lower tier to have our breaks and lunch. Back then there were tons of holes and you could see straight down to the river if you walked out a bit. They’ve done a nice job with making this a tourist spot.

  3. Great memories. I remember riding the streetcar as a child downtown from W25th, when I lived on W38th and Dennison. When going over the Cuyahoga River, you could look down through the rail bed and see the river. Getting off at the Terminal Tower to shop with my mom and then over to Higbees for lunch.
