Cleveland 19 News announced Tuesday morning that they’d hired a new Chief Meteorologist to lead their First Alert Storm team. Jason Nicholas, a Northeast Ohio native, will appear on the weekday newscasts at 5 p.m., 6 p.m., 10 p.m. and 11 p.m.

“I’m beyond thrilled to be the newest member of the Cleveland 19 [weather team],” Nicholas said in a press release. “I grew up here and I want to work here. I’m from Medina and I’ve worked on TV in Cleveland for 10 years, so continuing to grow my career in Northeast Ohio was a huge priority. I’m blessed to have found an ideal landing spot at Cleveland 19, and the chance to work and lead true professionals like Jeff Tanchak, Samantha Roberts, Jon Loufman and Beth McLeod is a dream come true.”

Via Cleveland 19, Nicholas graduated from Ohio University and studied meteorology at Mississippi State. As Nicholas mentioned above, he’s worked locally for the past decade, serving as a weathercaster at WEWS Channel 5. There, he became the first local meteorologist to be recognized as a Certified Broadcast Meteorologist by the American Meteorological Society. He won five Emmys as well.

Medina must be a hot spot for weathermen: Nicholas grew up down the street from Cleveland meteorological legend Dick Goddard, who retired last week. Nicholas said was inspired by Goddard’s career.

“With Mr. Goddard’s retirement, it’s a new era in weathercasting in Cleveland,” Nicholas said. “I’m really excited to be a part of it.”

  1. I think Tanchak was too hot on Romona and got demoted if you remember he told Romona that he wanted her under the mistletoe and Romona responded my husband is watching and Jeff was like so what next thing you know he is demoted Jeff Jeff you cant Trump ladies especially on air

  2. I wish Jason Nickolas would stop spreading his legs open in front of the weather map it looks really weird . He kinda bends and spreads his legs open. It’s a bad habit , I think he’s trying to act like he’s down to earth too phony, when he does this its Kinda freaky looking and I have to turn it off . Sorry but I just can’t stand watching it. Where’s Jeff…..????????? And why the heck would they not make Jeff Chief meteorologist . He was so down to earth . Such a real personality. I’m not sure how much more of Jason I can take. Uhg!!!!!!

  3. Have you noticed the weather hasn’t been very accurate since Jason started. I’m with everyone else Jeff tanchak is the best and the only reason I watch channel19. Jason is horrible! Bring back Jeff.

  4. They definitely need to bring Jeff back as Chief Meteorologist!! He shouldn’t have to play second fidle to Jason. Jeff is awesome. Great personality and accurate on the weather!!! STOP making changes CHANNEL 19…ESPECIALLY when they are bad ones!!! I know at least 4 people that stopped watching because of you changing things just to save a buck!! BRING JEFF BACK and we will watch again!!!

  5. Jason is such a poser, and he seems to be doing it more and more. Cleveland needs Jeff! His forecasts were more on spot than Jason’s. Maybe he’d be better suited for a place more like Barrow, Alaska.

  6. I agree with the other viewers, Jeff Tanchek is the best!! No disrespect to Jason, but hes not my cup of tea. In a city where the weather constantly changes, especially in the winter, I scan the channels until I find a reliable, and trust worthy weather person, and if I see Jason, I keep searching. I think their station has done a grave injustice to Jeff, by not allowing him to continue to be Chief Meteorologist , and bringing in a younger, pleasing to the eyes person like Jason, who should be a backup to Jeff, and not in the forefront . Its a shame that the station hasnt learned anything from the stories they air. What happened to giving us the best Weatherman for the job instead a younger not as good Weatherman, such a shame!! Hang in there Jeff, we fans love you and hope your station listens to the viewers before you jump ship
