While covering the 1977 Belmont Stakes (as the sports director of WINK-TV in Fort Myers, Florida), Craig Sager accepted a late Friday night invitation from Seattle Slew’s trainer Billy Turner to save money on lodging and sleep on a wooden bench in Barn 54 with a bunk-mate who would soon capture the Triple Crown. Several years ago, he penned a recollection on this incredible backstretch tale in an online story entitled — “Stabling with a Triple Crown Winner: Craig Sager’s Tale of 1977’s Belmont Stakes”.
