The call for this demonstration came in the wake of last week’s utter chaos at international airports around the U.S., prompted by near-unilateral decision-making from the new presidential administration. A Cleveland Clinic medical resident was forced to leave the country as soon as she landed at JFK, threatened, in fact, with deportation if she did not comply. (She has since filed a lawsuit against the president.)
One person, self-identifying as an undocumented immigrant, urged Mayor Frank Jackson and Gov. John Kasich to pursue “sanctuary” policies. (The governor has, at the very least, spoken out against the travel ban. He toed the line on the question of sanctuary cities while on the campaign trail.)
Area residents gathered at the federal courthouse this morning to welcome newly naturalized immigrants to the U.S., and, in talking with organizers around Cleveland, plenty more events are planned in the near future to celebrate the city’s rich history of embracing its immigrant population. Now, if only the mayor would lend a thought on literally any of these subjects.

“Temporary suspension” is the language used by countless dictators to normalize shocking behavior. Without pressure from the citizenry, such bans have a way of becoming permanent. No one from any other the countries “temporarily” banned has ever committed an act of terror on U.S. soil. You’re in vastly more danger of being shot by a fellow citizen than any immigrant.

Cool, that’s fair. We’ll just go back in time to 2008, when Barack Obama won a 20% larger “landslide electoral college victory” (which we’re now retroactively deciding has ever been A Thing) and “your side” can spend the past eight years being graceful losers, rather than engaging in constant attacks, sabotage, lies and, oh yes, insults and name calling.
Let me know when you’ve done this, and I’ll promptly return the courtesy by sitting quietly for four years while the president who won the smallest Electoral College victory in the past three elections (in addition to being rejected by actual voters by a margin of nearly 3 million) gets a free hand and no criticism.
