After five years in business, Play Arcade + Kitchen is officially closing in Mayfield Heights.

The spot, which billed itself as a family-friendly entertainment center that also hosted private events, is poised to close Saturday evening.

A statement of notice was sent to Scene today:

It is with sincere regret that we inform you that Play Arcade + Kitchen will be permanently closing its doors, effective March 1, 2020. Our last day of business operation will be February 29.

Our historic building, built-in 1948, has begun to show serious and sudden signs of its age. Critical repair issues have surfaced that have caused us to review our ability to provide a quality environment and a venue commitment to our future private events. After much consideration about how to best address this situation, it is apparent, and to our dismay, that our only option is to close our doors.

Once again, our lack of anticipation of the severity of these repairs has placed us in an unfortunate position to make a decision that ensures enough advance notice as possible for relocation/rescheduling your event.

Thank you for supporting PLAY during our 5 wonderful years in business.

  1. That place was awful. Food sucked and overpriced. And the games were limited and generic. It was better as the Boneyard

  2. Another business that would have benefited greatly from my “Is this a stupid idea?” consulting services. DOA before it opened. Only got worse there after (isn’t abuse of a corpse a felony?)

  3. Another abandoned hulk in Cleveland.

Joining Severance and probably soon the mostly abandoned University circle complex .

Living in Cleveland is basically an adventure in despair.

  4. It’s easy to make excuses and place the blame on an old building, but in reality, the place wasn’t great. It was very expensive, hard to justify for a game night or something. When I went with friends, it seemed like every other arcade game was out of order. I never tried the food, but it certainly is not a place I would have ever considered going for a meal. The Boneyard was better.

  5. Bye bye to low quality awful food, bye bye to low quality outdated tasteless drinks. Bye bye to 4 out of 5 years of business being in decline. Bye bye to an identity crisis of a so called business.
Not a single soul will miss this dump.
    Good Riddance.

  6. I’ll miss hanging out on the back patio listening to bands during the summer months. I grew up a few streets away, had an uncle that was a projectionist when it was the Mayland Theatre, rode my bike there to see Jimmy Piersall live when they showed Fear Strikes Out and had a great time when it was the Boneyard. Hope someone can rehab and open it again.

  7. shocking

where will all the bearded and tattooed millennials go to get their craft beer and vape now?

  8. I’m personal loved the placed. The food was great and my kids loved it. We also went to several parties there and had a great time at all of them. My family and I have fun and happy memories of going to play arcade and I’m personally sad that they are closing. I’m glad I read this article this morning. I plan on take my child there for lunch and enjoying there last day of business with them and show my appreciation for there service over the last five years..

  9. This place was the pitts.
Food was awful. Ate there a few times and my family and I always got sick.
Staff was adequate at most and the place wasn’t exactly clean. A real buzz kill.

  10. Hahaha Cleveland sucks….Daniel Tosh was right seriously this place is nothing but close restaurants and beer places

  11. I worked there when the place first opened and I hated it. If I wanted to bring in my family to eat, I wasn’t even allowed a discount. ONLY if I had one other person with me my boss allowed a discount. He was so cheap and yes everything was extremely overpriced. He even used to tell me how to wear my hair to work. I hated him so much. And the pay was shit! With as expensive as everything was, he could have been making repairs and keeping up with the place instead of complaining about how old it was. The age of the place is the beauty of it. And he put absolutely ZERO effort into keeping it healthy!
