The Cleveland area is now home to 10 dogs and 20 cats displaced by Hurricane Florence. To avoid overcrowding, rescues from the Hilton Head Humane Society in South Carolina were shipped to the Northeast Ohio Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals (SPCA) in Parma yesterday morning.
Amid the devastation down south, The SPCA was eager to give these pets a new home.
“We were very humbled to to help out animals within the community,” SPCA Development Director Morgan Zielinski tells Scene.
A long-time partner with the Puppy Pipeline Rescue of Georgia, the SPCA has a history transporting southern pets to Ohio. Executive Director of the Northeast Ohio SPCA, Jeff Kocian, attributes this partnership to the southern heat, claiming that there are more strays down south because of the milder winters. However, he says the SPCA is up to the challenge of rescuing the growing number of strays.
“We suspect the need’s still gonna be very big, so there’s gonna be a lot of displacement,” Kocian says.
Some of the rescued pets have already been adopted, but the remaining rescues will be joined by more South Carolina refugees next week. The SPCA has yet to confirm whether all the pets will be available for adoption, but Ohioans interested in showing southern pets some love can visit its website for more information.
