Kurentovanje

Cleveland is home to the largest population of Slovenians outside the Old World. And each winter, many of those local Slovenian-Americans gather for one of the most unique cultural celebrations in the region.

The annual Cleveland Kurentovanje – now in its 14th year – kicks off on Saturday, February 7, and runs for eight days, with both in-person and virtual events for folks of all ages. Billed as a Slovenian-infused Mardi Gras festival, the celebration hosts annual crowds of approximately 2,000-7,000 attendees, all eager to see the star of the show: the traditional carnival figure known as the kurent. Draped in a furry sheepskin garment, and adorned with a chain of clamorous bells, the kurent’s job is to chase away Old Man Winter.

“Cleveland Kurentovanje is truly a community celebration,” says organizer Kathy Walters. “From cultural performances to children’s activities to our signature parade, the festival brings people of all ages and backgrounds together to experience the vibrancy, warmth, and joy of Slovenian traditions. We’re proud to make this a festival where everyone feels welcome.”

The annual festival begins with the “Kurent Jump” at the Slovenian National Home (6417 St. Clair Ave.) and culminates with a grand parade and festival on Saturday, February 14. In between are a wide variety of events, screenings and programs held both in-person and online.

“Each year, we work to create a festival experience that’s bigger, more engaging, and more welcoming than ever,” states organizer Lauren Calevich. “For 2026, we’ve expanded our programming to spotlight the richness of Slovenian culture while creating more opportunities for families, longtime festival fans, and first-time visitors to connect, celebrate, and make memories together. This includes a robust lineup of virtual events, making it easy for people across the country—and around the world—to join in the festivities.”
