Artist Lacey Petrovich says her paintings in
Cannibalicious are “an illustrated look into the parts of the
brain that have not developed past the age of 13.” It’s a bawdy show
that uses pop-culture images — not surprising given that
Petrovich is a member of the local burlesque troupe the Pussyfoot
Girls. It’s an adults-only show, she notes. Cannibalicious opens
with a reception from 7-11 p.m. Friday and continues through August 30
at Low Life Gallery (16001 Waterloo Rd., 330.671.6123, lowlifecleveland.com.)
The musical Me and My Girl is one of those
feel-good comic delights that helped keep England’s chin up during
World War II. Despite having been bombed out of two theaters, it ran
for two performances nightly for five years. It’s the story of a
cockney lad who’s actually the illegitimate son of a nobleman and heir
to a vast estate whose relatives want to clean him up and lose his
working-class manners before he’s ready for the swell life. Mercury
Summer Stock revives the show in a production directed and
choreographed by Pierre-Jacques Brault, with musical direction by Eddie
Carney. It opens at 7:30 p.m. Friday with additional performances
through August 22 at Parma Little Theatre (6285 W. 54th St., Parma,
216.771.5862, mercurysummerstock.com). Tickets:
$12-$15.
The Oberlin Conservatory of Music and the Cleveland Orchestra have
just announced what is sure to be a Big Deal in the world of musical
competition. The first Thomas and Evon Cooper International
Competition, slated for summer 2010, is for pianists. After
that, it will alternate — with violin competition in odd numbered
years and piano in even numbered years. At stake: $20,000 in prize
money and a performance with the Cleveland Orchestra. Unlike the
Cleveland International Piano Competition, now underway, the Cooper is
for musicians ages 13 to 18. The $10,000 first prize is one of the
largest in the world for that age group. The top three competitors will
also be awarded full four-year scholarships to the Oberlin Conservatory
of Music, pending admission, valued at more than $100,000 each.
Funder Tom Cooper is a 1978 graduate of Oberlin College and a member
of its board of trustees. He is a partner in the investment firm of
Grantham, Mayo, Van Otterloo & Company in Boston. His wife Evon is
a pianist. They live in the Boston area.
