Photographer William Earle Williams memorializes fallen black troops in A Song for Unsung Heroes: African American Soldiers in the Civil War, now on view at the University of Akron’s Emily Davis Gallery. The 60-piece exhibit features contemporary pics of onetime training camps, as well as some solemn images of Louisiana’s Port Hudson, where 600 black soldiers were killed in 1863. Also check out photos from a now barren Alabama battlefield where 20,000 soldiers fought the war’s last skirmish in the spring of 1865.
