On Sunday, Cleveland joined the national “scarf bombing” trend when two good samaritans decorated public square with scarves for the taking. Fellow crocheters Susan Butler and Angela Lett are behind the local “scarf bomb,” which is a way to donate warm clothing to those in need this winter. Butler and Lett got together with some family members and friends to give out 90 items including scarves, hats, and mittens.
“We wanted to help those who really needed a scarf if they’re stuck out in the cold,” Butler told Scene. “A hug from us with a scarf and safe wishes. It is great to know we will help keep someone warm on these chilly evenings.”
Inside each piece of clothing there is a note that reads, “Keep warm Cleveland, I am not lost. If you need to stay warm, please take me. Pay it forward if or when you can. We pray you will be safe and warm.”
Butler explained how they drew a lot of attention and inquiries since Sunday’s good deed, including 10 to 12 people from Cleveland, along with out of town requests to send donated scarves.
They hope to distribute 250 next month and created the Keep Warm Cleveland Facebook group for those who are interested to join the cause.
