Several of this week’s classical picks include multiple performances, so you can choose whatever fits your schedule.
– Wednesday boasts three interesting and unusual concerts, all at 7:30, beginning with the Amina Figarova Sextet, headed by the Azerbaijani pianist and composer, and the Matsiko World Orphan Choir, a 24-voice ensemble of at-risk Liberian children for whom she wrote her Suite for Africa (at Tri-C Metro Campus Auditorium).
– Meanwhile, CIM presents the four female vocalists of the Quince Ensemble in Mixon Hall, and the Oberlin Orchestra plays Dobrinka Tabakova’s Earth Suite: III. Timber & Steel, Arnold Schoenberg’s Cello Concerto with Darrett Adkins, and Kurt Weill’s Symphony No. 2 led by Maurice Cohn (in Finney Chapel).
– On Thursday, Klaus Mäkelä flies in to lead the Cleveland Orchestra and choruses with mezzo-soprano Jennifer Johnson in Gustav Mahler’s Symphony No. 3 (7:30 at Severance Music Center, repeated Friday at 7:30 and Saturday at 8).
– Also on Thursday at 7, No Exit New Music begins its new season with a triptych of concerts featuring a trio of world premieres at CSU’s Drinko Recital Hall (repeated on Friday at Waterloo Arts, and Saturday at SPACES Gallery, both at 7:30.)
– Then on Friday at 7:30, Apollo’s Fire revisits one of its specialties — J.S. Bach’s “Brandenburg Concertos — playing Nos. 2, 3, 4 & 6 at St. Paul’s Church in Cleveland Hts. (repeated on Saturday, Sunday at 5 at First Methodist Church in Akron, Monday at 7:30 at Harkness Chapel, CWRU, and Tuesday at 7:30 at Rocky River Presbyterian Church.)
– On Saturday at 2, Les Délices presents “Arcadian Dreams” at Hudson Library & Historical Society (repeated Sunday at 7:30 at Harkness Chapel, CWRU), and the early music chamber ensemble Wit’s Folly presents Salón Español at 7:30 in St. Noel Church in Willoughby Hills (repeated on Sunday at 4 at The Bath Church.)
– The Cleveland Composers Guild will collaborate with the American Guild of Organists on Sunday at 3 at Morley Hall in Painesville for a concert of organ music written by its members.
– And on Monday at 7:30, the Rocky River Chamber Music Society will open its 66th season at West Shore Unitarian Universalist Church with a visit by the Gropius String Quartet from Germany.
