With a Little Help From His Friends

Bobby Bare Jr. had a cool idea for his CD, The Longest Meow: Last March, 11 pals went into the studio for 11 hours straight and recorded 11 songs. They emerged with the roots rocker's loosest, most beer-soaked record. "It was the most fun I've ever had making music in a day," says Bare.

Bare — who was nominated for a Grammy when he was five years old for a duet he performed with his outlaw country-hero dad — used to front the band Bare Jr. He went solo four years ago, releasing a pair of mostly acoustic albums. The Longest Meow (which includes performances by members of My Morning Jacket, . . . And You Will Know Us by the Trail of Dead, and Lambchop) is a sizzling return to the glittery glam-rock, southern swamp-rock, and mind-warping psych-rock of his old band. There's also a cover of the Pixies' "Where Is My Mind?" "I've always wanted to record a bunch of people in a big room at the same time," says Bare. "And I just wanted to make a big rock record."
