Battuto bites the dust

After almost eight years as one of Little Italy’s smartest, most contemporary ristorantes, Battuto will close for business following dinner on Saturday, August 4. While well-loved for its fresh pastas and ethereal panna cotta, Battuto’s business nonetheless had fallen off over the past year, says co-owner Giovanna Daverio, and there was no longer any margin for cost cutting. In large part, Daverio blames the region’s economy, as well as competition from national restaurant chains. “The paper tells us every day how poor we are,” she said during a recent phone call. “People just don’t think they can afford to eat out.” Neither she nor chef and co-owner Mark Daverio have plans for future food-related ventures at this point. “This just kind of snuck up on us; we haven’t really had a chance to think about it yet. I think we’d just like to hold onto the property and maybe lease it out.” Davario says that, ironically, news of the impending closure has created a surge in business. “People have been coming out of the woodwork since we announced the closing. I’m like, ‘Helloo? Where have you been? Standing in line at the Cheesecake Factory?’” – Elaine T. Cicora
