The November issue of Food & Wine magazine offers its take on Cleveland, as part of its series on Food & Wine Across America. Among the spots getting some national lovin’ are Momocho (“terrific modern Mexican food”); Light Bistro (“fantastic lemongrass-chile pickled shrimp); Michael Symon’s Lola and Lolita; and in Tremont, Lucky’s Café. Editor and undercover eater Kristin Donnelly also dug Fire (“I loved everything that came out of chef Doug Katz’ tandoor oven”) and Flying Fig, where she swooned over chef Karen Small’s “crackly-crisp tempura-fried green beans.”
All fine exposure for our well-fed town. As for Small, though, she took Donnelly’s praise with a grain of salt. “Here I am, cooking up all sorts of great food, and what does she write about? Green beans!” laughed the chef, who’s garnered lots of media attention of late for her 8-year-old bistro. “How’s that for a legacy?” — Elaine T. Cicora
