I’ve been writing about Asiatown so long that I remember when we used to call it Chinatown. The neighborhood moniker officially shifted in 2006 as a way to better reflect the cultural diversity of that east-side enclave.
Back then, the restaurant offerings were limited to a handful venerable Asian mainstays like Siam Cafe, Bo Loong, Li Wah and Korea House, and markets such as Tink Holl at Asia Plaza.
It’s been a blast covering Asiatown for 25 years, watching as new cafes, restaurants and markets open, adding a wealth of fresh culinary energy to the wider neighborhood of St Clair Superior, joining gems like Slyman’s, Shay’s and Superior Deli.
Today, the neighborhood boasts more than 50 independent eateries that cover a broad range of cultures, cuisines and tastes.
“St. Clair Superior is one of Cleveland’s most diverse neighborhoods, and our food scene reflects that richness — from long-standing family-owned favorites to new and exciting culinary ventures,” states Terri Hamilton Brown, Executive Director of St. Clair Superior Development Corporation.
And now there’s an easy way to scan the offerings: a new St. Clair Superior Restaurant Guide – available both in print and online – packages all of the restaurants, cafes and carryout spots into one convenient publication.
As part of the official launch on December 8, there will be a week-long promotion dubbed Savor St. Clair Superior, where participating restaurants will offer special discounts to customers who mention the new guide.
Not surprisingly, nearly half of the restaurants listed in the guide are clustered in AsiaTown.
“AsiaTown has always been a vibrant anchor of the St. Clair Superior neighborhood, and we’re proud to be part of it,” says Li Wah owner Ed Hom. “Our relationship with St. Clair Superior Development Corporation goes back many years, and we’ve seen firsthand how committed they are to lifting up small businesses. Their support isn’t just helpful — it strengthens the whole community. We’re excited to be featured in the guide and to welcome even more people to experience the culinary traditions of our neighborhood.”
Pick up a copy of the guide at the offices of St. Clair Superior Development Corporation (6403 St. Clair Ave.) and view it online here.
