This week, Grumpy’s Café (2621 W 14th St., 216-241-5025) owners Kathy Owad and Kristi Mulloy have opened the doors to Village Rose Deli (328 Bassett Rd.) in Bay Village. Formerly home to Bay Provisions and Martin’s Deli, the property has undergone more than a few renovations and improvements before this week’s soft opening.

The aim, according to Owad, was to transform the business from a quiet coffee and ice cream shop into a bustling neighborhood deli.

“This is not going to be another Grumpy’s,” she says. “We’ll still do the coffee and the ice cream but we’re going to have a lot of food to go, soups, some groceries, beer and wine… Just bring it back to a neighborhood place where people feel comfortable coming for a cup of coffee, some ice cream or stay for dinner.”

To start there is a full espresso bar, breakfast sandwiches, grab-and-go pastries, beer and wine to go and other retail items. Chef Brittany Reilly is in charge of the food offerings.
