Shaker Heights Bakery Opens Doors to Community

Local bakers who've spent hours perfecting their pastries and serving them up to enthusiastic friends and family members who harp, "You could sell hundreds of these pastries! They're so good!” may now be able to make that dream a reality thanks to Shaker Heights resident Saidah Farrell.

Farrell opened Olivia Rose Community Bake Shop, named after her two daughters (and part-time employees) Olivia, 12, and Rose, 16, earlier this month on Cleveland's east side with one goal in mind: to make a true community bake shop. For Farrell, that means she hopes to add to the existing baking community by creating a space where other bakers can make and sell their products. 

For $15 an hour, bakers can use the Olivia Rose Community kitchen and then sell their goods directly from the shop. Farrell uses social media to announce what's cooking in her kitchen and inform others to come in and purchase the goods. Farrell does ask for bakers to provide proof of insurance but doesn't have time restrictions and sells bulk ingredients on site. 

Additionally, Farrell will soon offer a variety of classes such as macaroon- and croissant-baking courses. Farrell said she wants to make sure her classes are available to everyone while sharing her knowledge. What's more, her prices are substantially lower than those of her competition. For example, Olivia Rose offers macaroon baking classes for $30 whereas folks can find a similar class at Sur La Table in Woodmere for $69. She expects the classes to sell out at this price and asks for 48-hour notice and a minimum of three students.

While  Olivia Rose is just getting off the ground (it had a soft opening two weeks ago and a grand opening last weekend), already community support is pouring in. Stop in and see it all for yourself at 16832 Chagrin Blvd, Shaker Heights. The shop's open Monday, Tuesday, Wednesday and Friday from 9 a.m. to 6 p.m. and on Saturday and Sunday from 8 a.m. to 6 p.m. It's closed on Thursdays for private events.
