Owners Barbara and Kurt Zoss made the announcement, which was brief and to the point, on Facebook.
“We will be closing our bakery on Saturday March 30. Thank you for being the best customers.”
Zoss was a family affair, with the couple’s children helping out over the years as the bakery pumped out fresh pretzels, breads, strudels, puff pastries and rolls. Kurt was born and raised with the art of breadmaking. In Switzerland, his grandfather and uncle both owned bakeries and he began apprenticing at age 16. After he met his future wife in Mexico, they eventually moved to her native home, Cleveland Heights, after a stop in Los Angeles where Kurt worked at the La Brea Bakery.
“You’re doing something that you can see,” Zoss told us last year about why he loved his job so much. “You get to hold it. It’s instant, more or less … I always like that aspect. And, you know, it makes people happy.”
