The English language debut from Korean director Park Chan-wook arrives with a good deal of anticipation. His foreign language flicks — particularly 2003’s Oldboy — suggest a singular vision and a unique take on the horror genre. In terms of visuals, Stoker certainly has plenty going for it. The story here concerns India (Mia Wasikowska), who gets a visit from her creepy uncle Charlie (Matthew Goode) on her 18th birthday. Turns out, he’s a cold-blooded killer and India has to try to protect herself and her mother (Nicole Kidman) from the guy. The slow-moving plot doesn’t do the film much justice but the switch from explicit gore to psychological terror suggests Chan-wook is moving in the right direction. Cedar Lee Theatre.
