It’s oldish news at this point, but Scene has just learned that the Willoughby Hills Movies 10 — the cheapest of all Cleveland’s cheapies — shut its doors for good at the end of February.

Execs from the Phoenix movie chain alerted the Willoughby powers-that-be a few months back that the theater would be shuttering at some point. It was a business decision, Scene has gleaned, due primarily to the prohibitive cost of transitioning to digital projectors. That cost, which can run up to $50,000 per screen, has been crippling many small movie theaters across the country for years.

Plus, it’s difficult generating revenue at an establishment with patrons whose whole aim is spending as little money as possible. Going to the movies at Willoughby Hills, in case you never went, was the opposite of “cost-prohibitive.” The theater famously offered a $0.75 Monday movie ticket (formerly only $0.50!) which meant you could take the whole family to a flick for about half the cost of a Venti Frap.

  1. Sad to see the movie theater gone. Used to see some movies there as a kid. That area is losing a lot of businesses. I do hope for some more positive developments coming to Bishop and Chardon roads.

  4. iTS ABOUT TIME THE THEATRE CLOSES BECAUSE OF THE SHOOTING ROBBING AND RAPING…MAYBE ITS ABOUT TIME THE COPS OR CITY DOES ITS JOB AND CRACK DOWN ON THE SHOOTING , KILLING, ROBBING AND RAPING…. BUSINESSES SUFFER BECAUSE OF LACK OF POLICE PROTECTION….!!!!! YOU WILL NOT SEE THIS HAPPEN IN MENTOR… SOME PEOPLE THINK MENTOR POLICE IS OVER STEPPING THEIR AUTHORITY.. BUT YOU DO NOT SEE THE VIOLENCE AT THE MENTOR MALL OR IN THE CITY LIKE EUCLID SQUARE MALL , RICHMOND MALL, LOWEMANS PLAZA AND THE OTHERS. THANK GOODNESS FOR THE MENTOR POLICE.

  5. I hate to see the theater close. I hope another owner will pick it up and continue the tradition. It was a great “cost efficient” way for a struggling family to go out and have a good time. Especially in the summertime. You were appreciated Movies 10 and you’ll be greatly missed by this Mom and family.

  6. At least now the Willoughby police wont have to go there every Friday and Saturday and break up fights.
