With Haste on Its Breath (Nefarious Industries)
This Akron-based band goes for the esoteric and atmospheric in its full-length debut. Singer-guitarist Jeff Klemm wails on the album opener “Encircled.” Elsewhere, the songs stay true to “kaleidoscope rock,” the term the band has used to describe its neo-progressive rock. Heavily textured songs such as “Camera Eye” and “Dance by the Moonlight” have elements of Mars Volta. But the group slows things down for the simmering “Be Careful What You Wish For” and “Waiting for December,” showing it can capably change gears. Meticulously mixed and mastered by Kevin Antreassian at New Jersey’s Backroom Studios (The Dillinger Escape Plan, Foxy Shazam), the album makes for a great headphones listen. It isn’t due out until Oct. 7, but it’s available now for pre-order; the band plays two shows this week to celebrate its forthcoming release. — Jeff Niesel
Maid Myriad performs with Stems, Ottawa and the Spectral Type at 9 p.m. on Thursday, Aug. 14, at the Grog Shop and with From Borealis at 10 p.m. on Friday, Aug. 15, at the Stone Tavern in Kent.
