CD Review: Carina

Paradise Push

"Far Away," the lead cut on this Akron trio's debut album, immediately steers into Nickelback territory. So yeah, Carina don't break any new ground on Paradise Push, but they have plenty of testosterone to spare. They wear their baseball caps backward and look like they spend way too much time at the gym, but guitarist Dan Blatt is a powerhouse singer, evoking Axl Rose on the ballad "Angel" and getting all gruff on the hard-rocking "Roses." Many of the songs on Paradise Push sound like what passes for the heavier side of alt-rock these days (think Shinedown and other bro-rockers), even as the band simmers down for the swaggering "Blazed." — Jeff Niesel

Carina perform at 8 p.m. Saturday, March 19, at the Phantasy Nite Club.
