Last night, the locally based classical group Apollo’s Fire won the Grammy for Best Classical Solo Vocal Album for Songs of Orpheus, an album that features tenor Karim Sulayman. 

It’s the first Grammy for Sulayman, album director Jeannette Sorrell and Apollo’s Fire.

A “journey through love and redemption,” the album centers on the “timeless myth of Orpheus,” who went to great lengths to rescue his beloved. Album director Jeannette Sorrell and Apollo’s Fire instrumentalists teamed up with Sulayman to “evoke the changing moods of the Orpheus story.”

The group recorded the album at St. Paul’s Episcopal Church in Cleveland Heights.

You can see Apollo’s Fire this week when the group performs at 7 p.m. on Thursday at Music Box Supper Club.
