It’s amazing how far Christopher Cross has progressed from the near-fatal illness he contracted during the Covid pandemic. The 69-year old came down with Covid in March of 2020 and it almost killed him; he was paralyzed and couldn’t walk. He could barely lift his head. Slowly, he regained his strength. And his ability to walk. Ultimately, he was diagnosed with Guillan-Barre Syndrome.
Last night’s joyous show at the Agora was a rebirth of sorts. Cross hasn’t played Cleveland in quite awhile. The crowd was loving every tune from his forty-plus year career. He started strong with a trifecta of early hits: “Minstrel Gigolo,” “Alright,” and Never Be The Same.”
“Arthur’s Theme,” “Ride Like the Wind” and “Think of Laura” kept things moving through the 90-minute show. While his illnesses have slowed him down a bit and that high tenor wasn’t quite as crisp as it was when these songs were first recorded, the crowd didn’t care. They were there for the nostalgia factor. And to see a man come back from the verge of death with a renewed vigor.
