California-based quartet Dorothy played the fairly-new West Bank venue Globe Iron last night to a very enthusiastic crowd.
This is one of those bands that has slipped under the radar; they’ve been around since 2014 but haven’t achieved much mainstream success. There’s no good reason why this quartet isn’t more well-known. Led by frontwoman Dorothy Martin, the eponymous outift is a straight-up, old-fashioned Rock and Roll band punctuated by a single guitar, drums, and a bass. They’re definitely a throwback to a pure form of Rock, which is echoed in the unironic title of their 2016 album release, Rockisdead.
They deserve a lot more largesse than they’ve received since their debut EP, simply titled Dorothy.
While personnel have changed a bit for such a young band, vocalist Dorothy Martin is the soul of this outfit. Her powerful vocals have a bluesy, whisky-tinged sound and she got the crowd moving with the night’s first offering, “Down to the Bottom.”
The only negative aspect of last night’s show was its length: it clocked in at thirteen tunes at a little more than an hour.
Trio Eddie and the Getaway offered a forty-minute opening set, which was a mix of covers and some originals.
