BREAKING NEWS: Disco is NOT dead.

At least, that was the general consensus at the MGM Northfield’s Center Stage venue as ’70s stalwarts KC and the Sunshine band took the stage on Saturday night. Led by frontman/emcee Harry Wayne Casey, the twelve-member ensemble took the sold-out crowd back to a different time, before cell phones, streaming, and skinny jeans.

Prior to the band making their appearance, the venue pumped out Disco’s most prominent anthem, “YMCA” by The Village People. That set the tone, as anyone who could stand, stood, and went through the whole routine. When K.C. (Harry Wayne Casey) finally made his appearance, the place erupted into cheers. An extended instrumental opening, which showcased the tight musicianship of the large outfit, led into “Shake, Shake, Shake,” as Casey gave each member of the band time to shine.
Offering up another huge hit, “Boogie Shoes,” as their second number, the energy was high octane. Casey then dismissed the band and gave an extended monologue for about fifteen minutes. Noticeably heavier in appearance, he mentioned that his weight was the largest he has ever been. Jokingly, he said he thought of changing the name of the band to “KFC and the Sunshine Band.” He’s 73 years old and enjoying the fruits of his 50+ years or labor. We’ve all packed on weight during COVID; the audience didn’t care, they’re all there for the music.

And, yep, did they deliver. Disco was never a darling of music critics. The audience didn’t care. Hovering around post-retirement age, they forgot their troubles for a bit and transported themselves back to a simpler time.

Even if their boogie shoes have been replaced by therapeutic slippers and compression socks.
