Lewis will speak at 3 p.m. tomorrow at the Cleveland Museum of Art. Part of the museum’s Experiments in Art and Music series, the lecture will center on how the black avant-garde, specifically the Association for the Advancement of Creative Musicians (AACM) and the African Commune of Bad Relevant Artists (AfriCOBRA), used music and art to highlight racial and economic injustice in Chicago in the years following the civil rights movement.
A member of the AACM since 1971, the versatile Lewis, the Edwin H. Case Professor of American Music at Columbia University, works as a composer, musicologist, performer and computer-interactive artist.
Admission is free, but a ticket is required.
