Simeon Soul Charger Hold a Coffin Party

Akron’s Simeon Soul Charger dabble in awesomely creepy cosmic rock. In mid-April, the band released its second EP All Rather Dead, inviting listeners to join the “Coffin Party” and “A Dance for the Moon God,” gothic alt-rock orchestras built on titanic guitar riffs, symphonic suites, multi-layered melodies, and frontman’s Aaron Brook’s sky-scraping tenor.

The group has just released a damn good video for the single “Coffin Party” — the best local vid we’ve seen since Mr. Gnome’s “Spain.” Check it out above.

Band friend Mike Manhart flew in from Germany in late June to shoot the video. The white background scenes were actually shot in Brook’s living room, after the band picked up white masks from the craft store for about $5 each. The four-piece rented out an old warehouse at the Akron Selle Co. for $100.

“The top floor where the video was shot wasn’t in use,” says Brooks, “but the floor below was full of employees who bitched the whole time that we were making too much noise.”

The classroom scenes were shot in Ravenna High School. The store scenes were shot at a grocery store in Edinburg. The whole thing took about three days with a budget of about $140.

If you’re interested in more, go see Simeon Soul Charger on Friday. They’re playing a benefit at Annabell’s Bar and Lounge in Akron for the Tri-State Bird Rescue and Research organization. Entry is free (unless you’re under 21 — then it’s $5). Enjoy this video till then. —Keith Gribbins
