They’ve even created their own genre, which they’ve dubbed “uke-punk.”
“When people hear ‘uke-punk,’ they often confuse it with ‘folk-punk,'” says Willow Hawks “We hope people finally stop confusing us with ‘folk-punk’ with our newest single, ‘Shitty Boyfriend.’ I want to get rid of the stigma around ukuleles and the idea of what punk can and can’t be. I’m here to shatter that stereotype and show people that a girl with a uke can be as loud as she wants.”
The band has just released a music video for the snotty new song “Shitty Boyfriend.” It features a looping animation while the song plays in the background.
“I wrote this song for my best friend,” says singer and ukulele player Hawks. “But this is really for anyone going through a breakup with a person that never deserved them in the first place. I think, overall, ‘Shitty Boyfriend’ is about overcoming heartbreak and not forgetting who the fuck you are.”
The group kicks off a short East Coast tour with a March 15 show at the Hoe Garden in Kent. It then plays shows in New Jersey, Philadelphia, Brooklyn and Pittsburgh.
