On his blog Vidmagmedia, Jeff Reding, the former executive producer of VidMag Television from 1986 to 1993 and the former editor-in-chief of modern Musik Magazine, regularly posts videos featuring old Cleveland punk and rock acts. He’s recently unearthed a gem from the Whining Maggots, a band that features members of Cleveland acts such as the Dead Boys, Pere Ubu, New Salem Witch Hunters, Death of Samantha, Easter Monkeys and Prisonshake. Death of Samantha singer John Petkovic [pictured], who now also fronts Cobra Verde and Sweet Apple, takes the lead on several tunes.
Dead Boys Jimmy Zero had put the band together to play a benefit concert for local filmmaker Robert Banks. The set features the band’s take on tunes by Iggy Pop, Lou Reed, Easter Monkeys, Iggy and the Stooges, the Beatles and the Stooges. You can check the video out here:
Jeff has been covering the Cleveland music scene for more than 25 years now. On a regular basis, he tries to talk to whatever big acts are coming through town. And if you're in a local band that he needs to hear, email him at jniesel@clevescene.com.
