Well, WMMS is in good company. K-Rock jocks don’t play anything that was recorded since 1990, nor do they realize that people listen to a rock station so they might avoid rap and nig-hop — yet, they persist in playing lamewad rap such as that one song by Cyprus Hill. And what’s with The Beastie Boys? They sounded like parody in 1981 and they’re even more of a joke now. K-rock, though, is none the wiser and, apparently, deeply invested in its subdefective performance.
Brilliant story.
WMMS is so fucking lame…talk about not letting go of high school yearbooks. This station further substantiates radio’s lack of innovation and subsequent demise.
Here’s an idea all Program Directors: play primarily NEW music, and then throw in some nostaglic BS.
P.S.: I don’t listen to ‘MMS somewhat for the reasons set forth in this article, but the fact that they hired that homophobic, sloppy-second, leftover, white-elephant,
punk-bitch Rover and his gang of brutes, knuckle-dragging troglodytes, inbreds, mouth breathers and pinheads is a pretty good indicator of where the station’s standards are.

Unfortunately I have to disagree with your assessment that K-Rock doesn’t play anything recorded since 1990. If that was the case, that would cancel out Three Days Grace, 30 Seconds to Mars, Disturbed, Rob Zombie, Weezer, and many other bands that I could mention.
So if it’s true that “station programmers have designated huge chunks of their weekday schedule to music” on WMMS, then 923 K-Rock must be quadruple huge chunks of their weekdays to music—basically from 9am on their doing nothing but playing ROCK!!! There’s no comparison between the two stations, one’s a Rock station and the other is a talk-stop.

Nick: My reference to 92.3 not playing anything recorded since 1990 was clearly “exaggeration humor”, as Opie & Anthony would call it. The point is, every other song is Nirvana, which, as of 1994 was about as alt as YouTube is now. Go a little further left on the terrestrial-radio dial, or log in to some cybercasts and you’ll understand how limited the offerieng so f commercial radio are in light of the vast variety of product available. And Rob Zombie is your example of current material? Were you supporting or refuting my point?
George Mikey: How horrible can my opinions and I be if you’re incorporating my name into the way you identify yourself? How about you look up the definition of “hate speech” (on Answers.com or Wikipedia, here they’re going to really get into it), then go re-read some print copies of SCENE as well as the archives of C-Notes? Then, listen to Rover and Duh’ohhh-Dieter rant about beating children and bashing gays for a week? Then, maybe, you’ll have gained enough insight into the true nature of snark and contempt so you can step off your pedestal and write some commentary that has substance. Nut up, Mary.

Commercial radio is for the schmucks that want to hear the bands that I mentioned, as well as the bands that you mentioned. I’m not going to say that I spend all of my time listening to it, but I understand why it is the way it is.
Sure, college radio and cybercasts are doing cool things – because it’s college radio and cybercasts. They’re not quite the business machine that commercial radio is. They for the most part, don’t have goals and budgets to hit.
Good news is, that with the coming onslaught of wireless being available in the cars – everybody wins. I can listen to KCRW, WXRT, WJCU, and any other station with an internet stream in the car, once the technology hits. You’d better believe I’ll be stoked to be able to hear KFOG in San Francisco, WRIF in Detroit, and some of my other favorites, once the technology is there.
See I think WMMS is ahead of the curve here. If someone wants to hear there favorite song their not going to sit around by the radio for hours to hear it. With everything now at the touch of a finger, finding your favorite song can be done in 10 seconds. WMMS has put on two of the best radio shows in the country and the station looks like it will continue to excell for many, many years to come.
