The Whiskey Island Coast Guard station served as Cleveland's Lifesaving Service headquarters from 1940 to 1976, when officials decided the harsh winters and remote location made it too difficult to operate and moved the Guard to its East 9th Street pier residence.
The station was left to the elements until the City of Cleveland purchased the building in 2004 and shuttered it in 2009, but one local photographer, Jeffery R. Stroup, offers a peek inside to showcase what years of burst pipes and Lake Erie winds did to the place.
