Things are going so well for sweet-tooth satisfiers Wendy Thompson and SynDee Klingenberg that they are taking the next steps in their master plan to delight the entire planet. By the end of April, the team behind the wildly popular A Cookie and a Cupcake (2173 Professor Ave., 216-344-9433, acookieandacupcake.com) will open Churned, a gourmet ice cream shop.
The Lincoln Park-side space in Tremont (1112 Kenilworth) previously occupied by Dish Deli and Take-a-Bite currently is undergoing the changes needed to transform it into a retail ice cream shop. A new awning is going up, walls are being painted, and equipment is sliding into place, says Klingenberg.
Churned will be an all-organic shop, with housemade ice creams being built around organic milk and in-house purees. Guests will have a choice of cups or homemade cones for the hard ice cream. As for flavors, "We're going to have some flair," says Klingenberg. In addition to staples like chocolate, vanilla and salty caramel, she promises unique flavors like peach lavender.
Ice cream also will be offered to-go in pints and smaller sampler packages. Wholesale business to local restaurants will be added to the operation down the road.
Klingenberg says that business at Cookie and a Cupcake continues to improve every year, which is allowing them to expand their sweets portfolio. Next up on the master plan: a Tremont donut shop. Hello!
"I don't discriminate against sweets," says Klingenberg.
