Update: Local girl Gibbs lost yesterday to Serena Williams 6-2, 6-1 in the second round match-up, according to SI.com. Still, not a bad at all.

Out in sunny California, at the Bank of the West Classic tennis tournament, a Cleveland native is set to face-off against Serena Williams today. Nicole Gibbs, a sophomore from Stanford who calls Shaker Heights home, advanced yesterday after putting down a competitor from Thailand. Patch has the details.

Williams is ranked number one in the tournament. She’s coming off a pretty manic year, with her first-round defeat in French Open, then rebounding for some court domination at Wimbledon. Gibbs ain’t no slouch, herself: this year she was a singles and doubles NCAA champion. She’s pushing through with school instead of jumping to the pro circuit.

"Serena was one of my idols growing up and I'm in awe of her," Gibbs said at a press conference.

Best of luck.
