The last thing we probably consider as we’re perusing the stores in an obnoxiously overcrowded shopping mall is that it will someday be abandoned in an unusual, almost post-apocalyptic manner. Ever wondered what that would look like?

The now (mostly) abandoned Euclid Square Mall is an eerie example of such an occurrence. The mall, which opened in 1977, supposedly met its end at the hands of the nearby Richmond Town Square shopping center, which expanded throughout the 1990s, even snatching away Euclid Town Mall’s Kaufmann’s for its own. Meanwhile, Euclid Square Mall essentially…retracted. The loss of Kaufmann’s was the catalyst of its downfall. The mall’s last store closed in 2006.

Now, strangely enough, a plethora of church groups use the abandoned shops as their makeshift places of worship — nothin’ like praisin’ in front of a former Spencer’s — and only a salon and Dillard’s outlet remain as feasible moneymakers. The Dillard’s is even sealed off from the inside of the mall, furthering the notion that you probably don’t want to aimlessly wander the abandoned corridors…unless, of course, you’re headed to the chapel or getting your nails done.

Check out these 20 creepy photos of what remains of the Euclid Square Mall. Thanks to our friends at Dead and Dying Retail for the photos.

  1. Everyone really knows what killed the mall, and it wasn’t Richmond mall. The Richmond Mall is headed in the same direction.

  2. I was just in this mall last week, what a shame! The mall is still a beautiful structure that is actually still in very good condition .. What a pity that this couldn’t be repurposed in some way.

  3. “Everyone really knows what killed the mall, and it wasn’t Richmond mall. The Richmond Mall is headed in the same direction.”

Spoken like a true racist. Nice job! You may want to watch your wording and who you group into your sad little world. Also, you may want to take an economics course or two. Idiot.

  4. Too bad its true, thays exactly what killed that mall. And Richmond Mall is headed in the same direction. Sad but true

  5. Wow and that’s exactly why there’s basically a war in Missouri right now. Way to contribute, y’all need severe help!!!!!

  6. It’s a statistical FACT (university study after university study) that poverty breeds violence, drug abuse, and crime. Its not just a theory anymore. It’s the epitome of laziness and blind bigotry to just assume it’s due to someone’s race (visit your local trailer park some time).

Rich folks don’t need to rob people at gunpoint in a mall –they just hire lobbyists that influence politicians to rob the taxpayers. These are the true “thugs”. Yet, these white guys (Gates, Soros, Koch, Buffett, et al) are worshipped like demigods by most people in this country. We have an entire consumerist cutlture dedicated to their worship. While robbing someone is a vile act of aggression no matter the culprit’s socioeconomic status, I feel the real criminals are not held accountable because they are white gentlemen in suits. The anger is misdirected. Kill the head vampire and the rest will be cured.

  7. Simply put—-it’s the rich guys who create conditions for poverty in the first place, and then try to pretend and convince everyone else it’s an individual moral failing. That’s utter b.s.! The problem is systemic in nature. Generational poverty creates these conditions. Rich white guys would rather you pin it on race alone because it diverts the focus away from them– the ones with power to make or break communities.

  8. Yeah, rich white guys are the problem. That’s why Cuba, China, the former Soviet Union, and Vietnam are such great places to live. Wise up. Socialism and crony capitalism are problems. Real capitalism is the solution. The truth is the Democratic Party has done everything possible to destroy cities in the US. They control most major cities with little or no opposition. They funnel taxpayers’ money to their friends and cronies and then raise taxes, forcing businesses to move and destroying entire communities. The Democrats have been the worst thing for black people since slavery. It is disgusting how horribly the party has treated black people considering how much support they get from the community. I still don’t understand how black people ended up supporting the Democratic Party, when that is the party that supported slavery while Republicans fought to end it. The only reason I can think of is welfare and that system has directly contributed to rampant poverty in black communities. I think most people in our country need to get a clue before it’s too late.
