Hub New Music — from Boston, which is often dubbed “the hub of the universe” — will make its second area appearance on Wednesday, March 28 at 7:30 pm in the Studio Theater of the Stocker Center at Lorain County Community College in Elyria. Michael Avitabile, flute, David Dziardziel, clarinet, Zenas Hsu, violin, and Jesse Christesen, cello, will play music by CSU professor Andrew Rindfleisch (the premiere of his Fun House), as well as recent works by Robert Honstein and Laura Kaminsky. No charge for this Signature Series event.
Akron’s Tuesday Musical Association will give its next concert on a Wednesday — March 28 at 7:30 pm — when New York’s conductorless Orpheus Chamber Orchestra joins violinist Augustin Hadelich for music by Irving Fine, Schubert, Haydn, and Tchaikovsky in E.J. Former Cleveland Orchestra associate conductor Brett Mitchell will return to town to lead the
CIM Orchestra in the late Lorin Maazel’s The Ring Without Words, a compact, user-friendly, no-singers-in-sight version of Richard Wagner’s cycle of four operas based on old Norse Legends. The free concert takes place on Wednesday, March 28 at 7:30 pm in Kulas Hall at the Cleveland Institute of Music. Can’t make it to the performance? It’ll be broadcast live over WCLV, 104.9 FM.
Trinity Cathedral in downtown Cleveland always marks
Good Friday with an evening concert. This year, Todd Wilson will lead the Cathedral Choir and members of Trinity Chamber Orchestra in Estonian composer Arvo Pärt’s striking Passio, a setting of the Gospel accounts of the arrest and crucifixion of Jesus. There’s no charge for the concert on Friday, March 30 at 7:30 pm, but a freewill offering goes to the expenses of the performance.
Another event on Friday, March 30th brings the
Brentano String Quartet to the Oberlin Artist Recital Series. The 8:00 pm concert in Finney Chapel on the Oberlin campus offers a fascinating program. Violinists Serena Canin and Mark Steinberg, violist Misha Amory, and cellist Nina Lee will play Steinberg’s arrangements of Renaissance madrigals — three from Carlo Gesualdo’s Book V and four from Claudio Monteverdi’s Book VI — as well as Oberlin faculty composer Stephen Hartke’s The Fifth Book, written for the ensemble, and Dmitri Shostakovich’s Quartet No. 12, Op. 133.
