Gregory Scott’s 'In Still Motion' Opens Tonight at 1point618 in Gordon Square

Beginning with an opening reception at 7 p.m. tonight, Jan. 23, 1point618 in Gordon Square presents its first new exhibition of 2015. Gregory Scott’s In Still Motion is a surreal viewing experience; presented in collaboration with Catherine Edelman Gallery of Chicago.

Cleveland-based artist Gregory Scott uses an eclectic variety of media in his process – including photography, installation, performance, video and painting – to challenge the viewer’s perception of visual reality.

Scott received a BS in Visual Communication from the Institute of Design in Chicago and his MFA in Photography from Indiana University. After a successful career as creative director and owner for an award-winning design firm, Scott says he realized design (except web design) was an exercise in creating a landfill.

For this show, Scott has created a site specific piece for 1point618, inspired by Belgian Surrealist Rene Magritte.

“I am producing a piece for the show that references Magritte,” explains Scott. “The main photo that contains the video is a shot taken in the front corner of the gallery. The piece will be hung in the same spot that the shot was taken, resulting in a surreal continuation of the space the viewer is standing in. The video portion of the artwork will include references to some of Magritte’s better known artwork. Those references come together in an abstract narrative about the human search for a partner.”

Scott’s work has been published internationally in publications such as Art News, Lenswork, Russian Esquire and Photo District News. His work has been exhibited throughout the U.S., as well as Germany, Russia and the United Arab Emirates.

In Still Motion and its opening reception are free and open to the public. Exhibition runs through April 17. Liz Maugans’ Screen Plays continues in 1point618’s Project Space through March 6.
