This morning, just 40 minutes after tickets went on sale, the team announced the game against the Boston Red Sox on Monday, April 4, is already sold out.
They play the Red Sox on April 6 and 7 as well, in case that matters. Tickets to those games are still available, as are PLENTY of tickets to the 78 other games that follow the opening series.Reminder: Progressive Field has a slew of new local food options debuting for the 2016.

PLENTY of tickets available for the remaining 80 games.
PLENTY of tickets available for the remaining 80 home games.
The home opener traditionally sells out but after that, the Tribe routinely plays to a less-than-half-full house for the rest of the season. Even with the reduced seating capacity, the typical attendance is at about 40% capacity…average gate was a miserable 17, 806 last year…second-worst of all 30 teams in MLB.
Only Tampa Bay does worse, but they have that shitty Orange Juice Field (with a roof) as an excuse. What is Cleveland’s excuse? Apathy? Poverty? Boredom?
A little over a dozen years ago, attendance was double what it is now (32,000 + per game), and the small-market Indians were in the top half of attendance figures…now they’re routinely at or near the bottom. It’s like the numbers fell off a cliff.
I guess it’s not about the love of the game anymore, because there doesn’t appear to be much of that left around here, except for a handful of old fanatical geezers who will soon die off. Winning big appears to be the only thing that puts the asses in the Tribe’s seats after Opening Day. Not baseball for baseball’s sake…not merely “being there.” That’s no longer “cool.”
I don’t think even turning the place into a foodie paradise (where the Millennials can eat and drink themselves silly…and text and tweet all their friends about everything but the game in front of them) will make a difference. Not unless the Tribe wins big.
It’s all about bandwagon-jumping and cheering for #1…and if there’s none of that available, folks in Cleveland will just continue to stay home.
Chuckles the Clown
This game could be played inside the football stadium, due to the ticket demand……with the remaining contests – outside of those that have bobblehead giveaways – at League Park.
Opening Day is a blast. Of course it sold out that fast. Yes, I wish that the rest of the games sold out also, and created an amazing atmosphere, but the days of blindly supporting a team are long past. Clevelanders are craving a winner, because it’s been a very long time since we had one of those. It seems the Cavs are on everyone’s radar nowadays, and that’s a tough act to follow…
