Throughout 2024, Ohio’s casinos and racinos continued to attract players, even as they faced challenges like increased competition from online options. Not all areas of the casinos performed the same. Slot machines continued to be popular, with their revenue slightly increasing in 2024. On the other hand, table games, like blackjack and poker, saw a drop in earnings. It seems that more players are sticking to slots rather than gambling at table games. Among Ohio’s four biggest casinos, Hollywood Casino led the way in revenue, followed closely by Jack Cleveland Casino.
Like any business, Ohio’s casino industry had its ups and downs throughout the year. March 2024 turned out to be the best month, bringing in the highest revenue. In contrast, months like December saw a slowdown, which could potentially be due to seasonal trends or other factors affecting how much people were willing to gamble.
Ohio’s racinos, which combine horse racing and casino-style gaming, also had a steady year. Even though horse racing itself struggled, overall betting at racinos increased by nearly 2% compared to 2023. Racinos are still attracting plenty of visitors, even as other areas of the industry face challenges.
With sports betting becoming more popular in Ohio, it’s adding a new layer to the state’s gambling scene. In 2024, a whopping $8.9 billion was bet on sports. However, even though more bets were placed, the actual taxable revenue from sports betting dropped slightly from the previous year. This could be because casinos and sportsbooks offered more payouts and promotions to attract bettors.
Despite some dips in revenue, Ohio’s casino and racino industry remains strong. A small drop in earnings isn’t a major cause for concern, as the numbers show the industry is still thriving. As casinos and racinos continue to adjust to changes in the market and player preferences, they remain a key part of Ohio’s entertainment and economy.
Another win in Ohio’s belt is the introduction of Senate Bill 312 (SB 312) by Former State Senator Niraj Antani. It aimed to legalize online casino gaming, including popular activities like online poker and slot machines, a move that could position Ohio as the ninth state in the U.S. to embrace such online gambling options.
It proposed allowing Ohio’s 11 casinos and racinos to offer online gaming platforms, either independently or through partnerships with established operators. The Ohio Casino Control Commission would oversee the new venture, ensuring that all online gaming activities are conducted responsibly and fairly.
Despite the bill’s potential to modernize Ohio’s gaming industry and generate additional revenue, it faced significant challenges. Introduced in September 2024, SB 312 struggled to gain traction in the legislative process. It remained stagnant for weeks before being assigned to the Senate Finance Committee in mid-November, where it did not receive a hearing or vote. Without a companion bill in the House of Representatives, the proposal lacked the necessary support to advance.
As a result, SB 312 expired at the end of the legislative session, leaving the future of online casino gaming in Ohio uncertain. While the bill did not pass, its introduction sparked discussions about the potential benefits and challenges of expanding into the online gaming sector. As neighboring states like Michigan and Pennsylvania have successfully implemented online gaming, Ohio may continue to explore similar opportunities in the future.
The push for legalizing online gaming reflects a broader trend of modernization within Ohio’s gambling industry. As the state evaluates its gaming policies, the experiences of other states and the evolving preferences of consumers will likely play a crucial role in shaping future legislation.
