Remember those phony British accents you and your friend tried out at the mall one day when you were in high school? That was a lot of fun, wasn't it? Apparently for Josh Mandel, the Republican running for Sherrod Brown's U.S. Senate seat, it still is.

At a campaign event Tuesday with presidential candidate Mitt Romney in Beallsville, Ohio, in the heart of Appalachian coal country, Mandel kicked off his brief speech in front of a photo-op backdrop of coal miners by speaking in a heavy backwoods accent. He rapidly dropped it, as if he either had second thoughts about this tactic or realized he couldn't carry it off. Mandel, of course, is from the Cleveland area.

Said Huffington Post,

The Cincinnati Enquirer said Mandel had not spoken in a southern accent before. Mandel hails from Lyndhurst, a Cleveland suburb near Lake Erie, far from the Appalachian part of the state.

Actually, although he served on the Lyndhurst city council, he grew up in Beachwood and currently lives there again. And that IS several miles south of Lyndhurst.

Luckily there's video. You can decide for yourself how convincing he is as an Appalachian coal miner — or whatever he was tyring to be.
