Police haven't been able to provide many details in the days since a 17-year-old boy died from a gunshot wound to the head while in the back of a police cruiser on Aug. 25.

During a recent press conference, Police Capt. Daniel Zampelli explained that the department is investigating what exactly happened: whether it was an accident or an intentional suicide, and how in the world the boy ended up with access to a gun while in custody in the first place. To make the matter more confounding, police say that the boy's hands were cuffed behind his back at the time.

Xavier McMullen was one of three robbery suspects, each held in a separate car after being arrested that night. The two victims had reported that one of the teenage suspects had a gun when the robbery happened in the southwest part of the city.

The news was also discussed during a press conference today, which also served as the final note in former Police Chief James Nice's tenure with the department. Mayor Dan Horrigan requested Nice's resignation after it became clear that he had been engaging with "inappropriate contact with a city employee and potential criminal misconduct."

"He lost his ability to lead the department," Horrigan wrote in a public statement.
