A Cuyahoga County Sheriff's deputy shot a man on I-90 near the West Boulevard exit at about 8 p.m., Cleveland.com and others are reporting.

The man was taken to MetroHealth in critical condition, EMS on scene has said, but the circumstances surrounding the shooting are not yet known.

The County Sheriff's office has not responded to a request for comment from Scene, but we'll update with details as they trickle in. Investigators are at the site currently.

For now, the backup on I-90 eastbound is significant. It's down to only one lane after a period of total closure. Alternative eastbound routes are recommended.

In an interview with local TV crews, a man named Jason Geiger said he witnessed the incident. Geiger said he stopped his car because a man appeared to be in need of aid. His face was covered in blood — Geiger said he thought a previous man had struck him in the head with a wrench — and was either high on drugs or "not all there." Geiger said the man appeared to be "instigating people." When the County Sheriff's Deputy arrived, in Geiger's account, he tried to calm the man down and used a taser to no effect. Geiger said the deputy fired one shot and the man then stopped moving. Paramedics arrived shortly, but Geiger said the man didn't appear to be moving.
